💡 Tips for Packing Your Hospital Bag

When to Pack

Aim to have your hospital bag packed by 36 weeks of pregnancy. Labour can begin unexpectedly, and having your bag ready gives you one less thing to worry about.

How to Organise

Use a large suitcase or duffel bag. Consider separate bags: one for labour & delivery items and one for postpartum recovery. Pack your partner's items separately too.

Keep It Accessible

Pack items you'll need during labour (phone charger, lip balm, massage tools) at the top or in an outer pocket. Don't forget the car seat — installed and checked by a certified technician.

How It Works

This checklist organizes what to pack into categories, items for you, items for your baby, and items for your support person, based on what’s commonly needed during a typical hospital stay for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

Most providers recommend having your bag ready by around 36 weeks, since labor can begin earlier than your due date, and having everything organized in advance means one less thing to think about once labor starts.

Every hospital and birth plan is a little different, so use this as a solid starting framework rather than an exhaustive requirement. Checking with your specific hospital or birthing center about what they provide (many supply basic toiletries and newborn essentials) can help you avoid overpacking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many outfits should I pack for my baby?

Pack 3–4 newborn-sized onesies or sleepers, plus 1–2 preemie-sized outfits in case your baby is smaller than expected. Include a warm cardigan or swaddle, socks or booties, and a going-home outfit appropriate for the weather.

Your partner should pack: comfortable clothes, toiletries, snacks and drinks, extra phone charger, a pillow and blanket, book or tablet for entertainment, and a camera. They may be at the hospital for 24–48+ hours, so they should prepare accordingly.

Hospital pillows are often thin and covered in plastic. Bringing your own pillow (with a coloured pillowcase so it doesn’t get mixed up) can make a huge difference in comfort. A soft blanket from home can also help you feel more relaxed.

Don’t worry! Hospitals provide essential items for you and your baby, including pads, mesh underwear, diapers, wipes, and basic toiletries. Your partner can also run out to get anything you forgot or have a visitor bring it.
