    💡 Understanding Ovulation & Fertility

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary, typically occurring around day 14 of a 28-day cycle. The egg survives for about 12–24 hours after release.

The fertile window spans approximately 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. This is because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days.

Cycle length varies from person to person. A normal cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. The luteal phase (the time after ovulation until your next period) is more consistent, typically lasting 12–16 days.

Tracking your cycle with ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature, or cervical mucus observations can help confirm your personal ovulation pattern.

    How It Works

This calculator estimates your ovulation date by counting back 14 days from the start of your next expected period. That 14-day luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your next period) tends to stay fairly constant, so if your average cycle length is 28 days, ovulation is estimated around day 14.

Shorter or longer cycles shift this estimate accordingly: with a 32-day cycle, ovulation is estimated closer to day 18, since it’s the follicular phase (before ovulation) that varies most between people, not the luteal phase after it.

This is a statistical estimate based on average cycle behavior, not a direct measurement of when you actually ovulate. Ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature tracking, or cervical mucus monitoring can confirm ovulation more precisely, especially if your cycles are irregular.

If you know your conception date instead, the calculator adds 266 days (38 weeks) from that date, since conception typically happens about two weeks after LMP.

For IVF pregnancies, dating is based on the embryo transfer date rather than LMP, since the embryo’s exact age is already known: 261 days from a Day 5 (blastocyst) transfer, or 263 days from a Day 3 transfer.

None of these methods predict an exact birth date only about 5% of babies arrive on their estimated due date. What they give you is a starting point your doctor will refine using ultrasound measurements, especially if your cycle is irregular or conception timing is uncertain.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this ovulation calculator?

This calculator provides an estimate based on averages. Actual ovulation timing can vary due to stress, illness, travel, or hormonal changes. For best accuracy, combine this with ovulation predictor kits or fertility tracking methods.

If your cycles vary by more than 7 days from month to month, standard calculators are less reliable. Consider tracking your ovulation with daily basal body temperature or ovulation predictor kits. Consult your healthcare provider if cycles are consistently irregular.

The chances are extremely low. The egg is only viable for 12–24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can survive up to 5 days. Conception can only occur when sperm meet the egg during this narrow window.

The luteal phase is the time between ovulation and your next period. It typically lasts 12–16 days and is relatively consistent for each person. A luteal phase shorter than 10 days may make it difficult to conceive. If you have concerns, speak with your healthcare provider.

Common signs include: change in cervical mucus (becomes clear, slippery, like egg whites), mild pelvic cramping (mittelschmerz), increased sex drive, breast tenderness, and a slight rise in basal body temperature. Ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge that occurs 24–36 hours before ovulation.
