About This Guide
This week-by-week guide provides general information about fetal development and maternal changes during pregnancy. Every pregnancy is unique, so your experience may differ from the descriptions here.
Weeks are counted from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP), which is the standard method used by healthcare providers. Conception typically occurs around week 2 of gestational age.
Not sure what week you're in? Use our Due Date Calculator to find out your current pregnancy week.
How It Works
This guide calculates your current pregnancy week from your due date or last menstrual period, then links you to detailed, week specific information covering fetal development, common symptoms, and what to expect at that stage.
Each week of pregnancy brings distinct developmental milestones, from early organ formation in the first trimester to rapid weight gain and lung maturation in the third. Reading ahead to upcoming weeks can help you know what changes to expect, while looking back at earlier weeks can put your baby’s current development in context.
Development milestones described here reflect typical ranges, not guarantees. Every baby develops at their own pace within a normal range, so use this guide as general orientation alongside, not instead of, your regular prenatal checkups.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is gestational age calculated?
Gestational age is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This means that at week 4, you’ve actually been pregnant for about 2 weeks (conception occurs around week 2). This is the standard medical convention worldwide.
What if I don't know my LMP?
If you’re unsure of your LMP, an early ultrasound between 8–13 weeks can provide a very accurate gestational age estimate by measuring the crown-rump length (CRL). This is considered the gold standard for pregnancy dating.
Why do some apps show different weeks?
Some apps calculate “fetal age” (time since conception) instead of “gestational age” (time since LMP). Fetal age is approximately 2 weeks less than gestational age. This guide uses standard gestational age consistent with medical practice.
What if my symptoms don't match?
Every pregnancy is different. Symptoms vary widely between women and even between different pregnancies in the same woman. The information provided describes common experiences. Contact your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
