💡 About Your IVF Pregnancy
Your baby is growing and developing. Attend all prenatal appointments and continue any medications as prescribed by your fertility specialist.
How It Works
IVF due dates are calculated differently from natural conception, because the embryo’s exact age is known at the time of transfer, rather than estimated from a last period date.
For a Day 5 transfer (a blastocyst), the calculator adds 261 days to the transfer date. For a Day 3 transfer, it adds 263 days, since a Day 3 embryo is two days younger at the time of transfer.
Because the embryo’s age is precisely known rather than estimated from ovulation timing, IVF due dates are generally considered more accurate than LMP-based estimates for natural conceptions, particularly for people with irregular cycles where ovulation timing is harder to pin down. Your fertility clinic’s calculated due date, if provided, should be treated as the most authoritative reference alongside this estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the IVF due date calculated?
For IVF pregnancies, the due date is calculated from the embryo transfer date, not from LMP. A 5-day embryo transfer adds 261 days to estimate the due date (since the embryo is already 19 days gestational age at transfer). A 3-day transfer adds 263 days (17 days gestational age at transfer). Frozen embryo transfers use the same calculation based on the embryo’s developmental stage at freezing.
What is the difference between 3-day and 5-day transfer?
Day 3 transfer: The embryo is transferred when it reaches the 6–8 cell stage, about 3 days after fertilization. Day 5 (blastocyst) transfer: The embryo is cultured until it reaches the blastocyst stage (about 5–6 days after fertilization), allowing for better selection of viable embryos. Day 5 transfers have a slightly higher implantation rate.
Is the due date different for frozen embryo transfers (FET)?
The due date calculation for FET is the same as for fresh transfers when using the same stage embryo. A day-5 frozen transfer uses 261 days, and a day-3 frozen transfer uses 263 days. The freezing process does not affect the gestational age calculation. Always confirm with your fertility clinic.
How accurate is the IVF due date calculation?
IVF due dates are generally very accurate because the exact date of conception (transfer) is known. Unlike spontaneous pregnancies where LMP may be uncertain, IVF provides precise dating. However, individual factors may still cause variations. Your healthcare provider will confirm the due date with an ultrasound.
When should I transition from my fertility clinic to a regular OB?
Most fertility clinics discharge patients to a regular OB-GYN or midwife between 8–12 weeks of pregnancy, after a viable heartbeat is confirmed and the risk of miscarriage decreases. Your fertility clinic will provide specific instructions and records for your new provider.
